I wasn’t going to write an article this week as I wanted to get ahead with other projects, but seems providence had other plans! Just as I sat down this evening, about to get to work on some video scripts and next weeks article, I had several personal messages about news coming out of Sweden. As I am sure most of you will be aware now, A Swedish politician, it seems could possibly put forward legislation that would effectively ban the use of Runes, and even other Nordic Heathen symbols!
Now, I would like to start this piece by saying that I do NOT believe this motion, if put forward would get any traction. I don’t think it could even be implemented, I mean what of all the museum pieces? Never mind in situ pieces like the Rök runestone. That being said, I wouldn’t believe a government would actively melt down Iron age artifacts without first using the (more profitable) option of offering such artifacts to private collectors first, but Sweden did just that back in 2017.
I don’t want to go into any great depth about the technical details of this madness, as many other much bigger outlets have already done so. I will though, link a video at the bottom of this piece which gives some more details and links to the original story. The story does however, allow me to address some other related points I have wanted to tackle for a while now.
The Runic alphabet is the first writing system of the Northern realms, not to mention its religious significance. Whilst the very notion that a nation would try to destroy its own heritage in such a manner may seem totally absurd, the very fact it is even being entertained at any level, especially that of a European government, shows the dire straits our history and heritage are in.
The importance of our history, the ability to freely explore it without fear of persecution and to have its priceless artifacts preserved for posterity, is immeasurable. As we often say here at Mimir’s Brunnr, “To learn of your ancestors is to learn of yourself, to know them, is to know who you are”, so such an idea is not only the destruction of history, but a PEOPLE. Without our history we are nothing but aimless leaves blowing in the wind and just as the leaf without the tree will wither and die, a people without a history shall also return to dust.
The question that begs to be answered is why? Why would a member of the Swedish government even consider bringing such a proposal forward?
Which leads me to one of the main points of this article, that of “Folkish” heathenism and its importance. A subject that is especially pertinent in this case too. The proposal has not yet even been brought to the Swedish government, it is kind of a proposal of a proposal at this time. As such it is highly likely and even the original article hints at this, that this proposal could be directed at “far right” groups.
“Far right” is something that is banded about quite a lot these days. I would bet though, that if you asked 100 people to define it you would get 100 different replies. Now, without going into the absurdity of all of that, many heathen groups across the globe have been accused of being “far right”. In fact any group that hasn’t bent over backwards and made “inclusion and diversity”, their main talking points or constantly talked about being “against hate” (whatever that means) has! So many of the groups accused of being “far right” or “hateful” are the very people that use Runic and Heathen symbols in there religious practice. However you look at it, this can only be seen as an attack on all heathen groups, regardless of your political standing.
For those that think of “Folkish” heathens as some sort of “hate group” merely for attaching a racial element to their beliefs, why? Before the advent of Christianity, the idea of racial Gods and Goddesses was quite common. Many early heathen ideas, both in Northern Europe and the rest of the world, were intimately linked to Ancestor worship which however you cut it has a racial element. It was only when Christianity took hold in Europe (and also ironiocally destroyed and outlawed ancient Heathen symbols) that the universalist idea of religion became the dominant one. Would you banish your forebears in vain attempt to appease radical modern ideologies of multiculturalism? And yes they are radical. The standard definition of a “nation” throughout history has been a racial one. Multi racial nations were only ever born of conquest and oppression, where one group dominated and subjugated another. Even though it has been several thousand years since the Aryan kingdoms of India were in full bloom, the racial cast system born out of it still exists! So the idea that mixing many peoples together will somehow result in some mythical “equality” is radical thinking.
But back to Folkish Heathenism, are we to determine who can and who cannot practice the ancient beliefs of Europe based on political ideology? I mean who are YOU, or anyone for that matter, to say what someone can or cannot believe and openly persecute them for it? With Boastful pride no less. The heathen groups that actively harass Folkish Heathens, seem to me to be becoming the abyss they think they are staring into………
The second point I wish to make is that of the importance of these ancient symbols and how the current establishment shows what it is in its reaction to them. This is highlighted with this “proposal”, however limited is extent may be. The only reason a state bans something is when it sees it as detrimental to its society. So why would Runic symbols be seen as detrimental to a society, or more bluntly, why would a state fear its own people embracing its ancient symbols and heritage? Surely it is something to be proud of, no? We are bombarded daily as to reasons why we should accept the cultures of others in our lands, yet when it comes to ours, we are demonised. Even Scandinavian Olympic teams and national football teams have all been criticised for usage of “viking” symbolism. When the cultures of others are promoted and your own is held in disdain with threats of jail, it leaves us with little choice but to assume that we ourselves are under attack. That our governments are actively seeking our demise, that is, our genocide.
Some of you may think I am taking this to far, I mean the proposal most likely wont be enacted and it will all probably amount to very little. This though, is just one in a long line of attacks upon the European diaspora. If you believe me to be some “conspiracy theorist” because of this, I ask you, go look at pictures of any major European city from 50 years ago, and take a look now. European nations, especially Northern and Western states are increasingly told to accept immigration as part and parcel of their modern societies. Whilst China still remains Chinese and India Indian, Western European countries are increasingly becoming multiracial. If the English, or the Swedish are mixed out and blended with the influx of new comers in their entirety, then there are no English or Swedish peoples. If the new comers decide the multicultural experiment hasn’t worked and long to be among their own, well there is a place they can go. I however, have no where to go and if I voice my concerns about where my nation is heading, I am hated and hounded by media and state, harassed and belittled, just because I cannot get off, as my home is the experiment and my folk the guinea pigs. Even if it works and together we build some mythical utopia, the unique peoples I called my own would be no more.
For further reference, ill leave an excerpt from the “Roman statute of the international court” the definition of genocide used by the United Nations, and let you decide.
Article 6 of the Rome Statute provides that “genocide” means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
If you are fine with this, that is, you believe the world (the west) will be a better place if we all just merged into one, then that is your prerogative. I will however, beg to disagree on this part and by doing so I should not be subject to slurs upon me because of it. If the only argument you have against me as that “I am hateful” for wanting my people to exist, then please go extend your slurs (and hatred) towards others, such as the Tibetans, Palestinians or Amerindians of America.
If you are like me though, and wish your people to exist for future generations, then there is a silver lining to all of this. By their fear of us taking up our ancient ways, we see its power. Any people proud of their heritage and actively practicing its ancient ways, will never allow itself the indignity of being written out of history or allowing circumstances whereby its children will be forced into minority status within their own homelands.
I leave this piece with the famous words of Galgacus, as he encouraged his folk to protect and defend their way of life.
“Think therefore as you go into battle of your ancestors and your posterity”

Well said.
Thanks Simon, hopefully more will start saying it, because many think it, I am sure!
Just like the Colonialist did to the Native American’s – total Genocide of Language, Beliefs, Culture. This action by Sweden is Wrong. It will come back to Haunt them as History clearly shows. -M
Beautifully put. In this current era of what seems like a coordinated attack on our heritage and people, I have come to the conclusion that the best thing I can do is to learn about my ancestors and continue their traditions to keep them alive. Since I trust your judgment, what are some good resources for studying this aspect of our heritage: the runic alphabet? Any particular books or websites? Thank you. Keep up the good fight. Regards
Hey Mike,
Learning of my ancestors, and their deeds, helped me immensely. Their struggles gave me hope, and their faith showed me the old Gods and Goddesses, who I also draw immense strength from.
As for the Runes a basic book most people recommend, and I myself own too, is Rudiments of Runelore by Stephen Polington. Personally though, I would after learning the basic ideas, of letter and symbol, do personal work with the runes.
For me personally, after learning the basics, found a more personal and in depth look preferable. After I came to the realisation that the Rune poems themselves could quite easily and in some cases more accurately be translated in other ways, I found it difficult to just read what others had attained from them. I will be writing more extensively on the Runes myself in the near future too (All free of course).
There are a lot of places you can go though, as with all things it is best to look where you feel drawn. All of the books on Runes will contain some wisdom I am sure, and if you can be wise enough to pick out the best bits and disregard what doesn’t seem to fit for you, you can’t really lose!
